چکیده

Nearly one-half of the earth’s terrestrial surface is susceptible to drought, which can have significant social, economic, and environmental impacts. Therefore, it is important to develop better descriptions and models of the processes linking the land surface and atmosphere during drought. Using data collected during the International H2O Project, the study presented here investigates the effects of variations in the environmental factors driving the latent heat flux ( E ) during drought conditions at a rangeland site located in the panhandle of Oklahoma. Specifically, this study focuses on the relationships of E with vapor pressure deficit, wind speed, net radiation, soil moisture content, and greenness fraction. While each of these environmental factors has an influence, soil moisture content is the key control on E. The role of soil moisture in regulating E is explained in terms of the surface resistance to water vapor transfer. The results show that E transitioned between being water or energy limited during the course of the drought. The implications of this on the ability to understand and model drought conditions and transitions into or out of droughts are discussed.

A comparison of summertime water and CO2 fluxes over rangeland for well watered and drought conditions

Continuous measurements of the surface energy balance components (net radiation Rn, sensible heat flux H, latent heat flux LE, ground heat flux G, and CO2 fluxes began in early June of 1995 at the Little Washita Watershed, near Chickasha, Oklahoma. A severe drought during 1998 provided a unique opportunity to evaluate the range of fluxes that can be expected during the summer period. Data obtai...

Preparation of Rangeland vegetation cover map and monitoring its changes in drought and wet periods using NDVI MODIS product (Case Study: Southern Rangelands of Yazd Province)

Knowledge of rangeland vegetation characteristics as well as factors affecting it in environmental planning, land management and sustainable development is very important. However, regional and up-to-date maps of pasture vegetation cover are not always available. In this study, in order to plot the vegetation cover percentage of the rangelands and monitor its changes in drought and wet periods,...

The impact of meteorological drought and grazing on the vegetation structure in aridlands (Case study: Nakhab Forest, Khosf County)

Drought and grazing rangelands play an important role in changing the structure of vegetation and losing the biodiversity of natural ecosystems. In this research, in order to determine the effects of drought and livestock grazing on the vegetation structure of rangelands located in the Nakhab Forest of South Khorasan Province, species abundance, biodiversity, and range condition and trend were ...

Resting Impact on Vegetation Cover of Fescue-Forbs Rangeland in Mongolia

The rangeland in the Khangai mountain region in Mongolia has degraded for the last decades mainly because of overgrazing and climate change. Livestock production is important part of the economy and is based on natural rangeland. In this research we seek to elucidate the influence of five years (2004-2009) of protection from grazing on vegetation cover of different degradation levels of Fes...

پتانسیل معدنی شدن نیتروژن خاک در اکوسیستم مرتعی تحت چرای آزاد و قرق دراز مدت در اقلیم‌های مختلف

Mountainous landscapes in Central Zagros are mainly used as grazing rangelands to feed animals and are heavily degraded. Overgrazing may impose a negative effect on rangeland productivity and sustainability through significant changes in soil properties. Soil nitrogen (N) mineralization is one of the key biological processes that might be affected by biotic and abiotic factors including range g...
